Thousands of people are scammed through the Internet every year. Scams could range from the loss of a few dollars to identity theft or even getting unintentionally involved in criminal activity such as money laundering.

How Scams Work?

Phishing:These are emails to collect your personal or bank account information. Never send your personal information by email. Sometimes, these emails contain a link to pages that look like the real employer but they are made to collect your information or install spyware or malware programs in your computer.

Spoofing: Offers that are too good to be true. Always verify the legitimacy of the employment opportunity. Visit the company website to validate the information. Avoid using links provided in the email, these can guide you to phony sites and/or install malware in your computer. Visit the company’s human resources webpage or call directly to verify the posting.

Money Laundering: Never accept a job offer that involves money transfers. If someone offers you a job without any kind of screening (no interview) it is a scam.

Resume Tips: Never include your social security, driver’s license, bank account, credit card information, date of birth, or any passwords in your resume. Prospective employers will not ask for this information. If one does it is a scam.

Reporting Fraud

Report fraudulent emails to the Federal Trade Commission www.ftc.gov If you are the victim of fraud, report it immediately to your local police department and file an online report with The Internet Crime Complain Center www.ic3.gov
